The
Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
800 years ago St. Dominic, founder
of the Dominicans, made this
prophecy:
"One
Day, Through The Rosary And
Scapular,
She Will Save The World"
The
Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is a great gift from heaven. Our Lady
wanted to signify her spiritual motherhood over mankind. The Brown Scapular is
the sign of that spiritual motherhood. Our Lady was made Spiritual Mother of
mankind by her Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, at the Cross on Good Friday. There, John,
the Apostle, the preferred disciple of Jesus, received her in his heart and at
his home, as Jesus gave him His Beloved Mother to look after her as He was
about to die. The Church sees in St. John, the image of mankind as all good
Christians invested in the Brown Scapular should become like John, other
preferred disciples of Jesus. Mother Mary wants us to become her preferred
children too and the Brown Scapular is the sign of that beautiful spiritual
motherhood and of our entrustment to her Immaculate Heart. Let us proclaim to
the world that we are the children of Mary, the beloved disciples of Jesus
Christ!
Q.
What is the Brown Scapular?
A.
The Brown Scapular is a sacramental, a sign of faith. It is part of the habit of Carmel. In
miniature form, it consists of two small pieces of brown material connected by
string and worn over the shoulders. The Carmelite Order, to which the scapular
belongs, originated on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land near the cave of Elijah
the Prophet, who was the inspiration of the early members of Carmel. During the
last apparition at Fatima (October 13, 1917), the Blessed Mother held in her
hand a Brown Scapular while she presented herself as Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
When asked why Our Lady held it, Sr. Lucia answered, “….because she wants
everyone to wear the scapular… because it is our sign of consecration to Her
Immaculate Heart”.
Q. What is the history of the Scapular?
A.
Let us proclaim to the world that we are the children of Mary, the beloved
disciples of Christ by using devoutly the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel! St. Simon Stock, General of the Carmelite Order, was the man God chose
to accomplish great work in his Order. About 1251, when difficulties seemed
insurmountable, Simon had recourse to Mary, who he loved. According to
tradition, she appeared to him and made the scapular of the Carmelite habit a
sign of her special love and a pledge of her motherly protection, saying:
“This shall be to you and all
Carmelites a privilege,that anyone who dies clothed in this shall not suffer
eternal fire; and if wearing it they die, they shall be saved”.
Catholic theology explains the
promise to mean that anyone dying in Mary's family (Carmelite Order or Scapular
Confraternity) will receive from her, at the hour of death, either the grace of
perseverance in the state of grace or the grace of final contrition.
The wearing of the scapular must be
understood to mean that one is striving earnestly to live up to all Christian
ideals. It does not take the place of the Church's sacraments, but is an
outward sign of inward commitment to virtue and Christian piety, under the
patronage of Mary.
Saints and Pontiffs have often
warned us of the folly of abusing Mary's promise. At the same time Pope Pius XI
joyfully professed: “I learned to love the Scapular Virgin in the arms of my
mother”, he also warned the faithful that “…although it is very true that the
Blessed Virgin loves all who love her, nevertheless those who wish to have the
Blessed Mother as a helper at the hour of death, must in life merit such a
signal favor by abstaining from sin and laboring in her honor”.
To lead a willfully sinful life
while trusting in the scapular promise is to commit a sin of presumption.
Q. What is the Sabbatine Privilege? How does it relate to
the scapular?
A.
The Church permits it to be said that those who faithfully wear the Brown
Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel after being enrolled in the Scapular
Confraternity, observe chastity for their state in life and daily recite the
Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be released from purgatory,
through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, soon after death, and
especially on Saturday (Sabbatine). All priests have the faculty to permit the
substitution of the daily Rosary or some other prayers for the daily recitation
of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This Sabbatine Privilege has
been supported by Pope Paul V in the seventeenth century as well as by Popes
Benedict XV and Pius XI in the twentieth century.
For the members of the World
Apostolate of Fatima, the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary
automatically gets substituted for the Rosary.
Q. What are the conditions for the Sabbatine Privilege?
A.
The conditions for the Sabbatine Privilege are: (1) Wear the Brown Scapular
faithfully; (2) Observe chastity according to one's state in life; (3) Say the
Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary which has been substituted for Rosary
for all those who make the Pledge and become members of WAF. (4) Live a
Christian life of prayer and penance.
Q. What is the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary?
A.
The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an ancient prayer of the
Church, consisting mostly of psalms and hymns commemorating the role of Mary in
the great mysteries of our Faith. It is arranged according to the eight hours
of the liturgical office, and requires from forty-five minutes to an hour. It
is recited daily by many orders of sisters and brothers.
Q. Do I simply begin wearing the Brown
Scapular, or must I be invested in it first?
A. To obtain the full benefit of the Brown Scapular devotion,
one must be validly invested in the Brown Scapular. The investiture “enrolls”
the wearer in the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
A Catholic can
be invested in the Brown Scapular by a priest, using the Scapular Ritual for
Priests in which the scapular is blessed. Once invested, you are invested until death. A
Scapular Ritual for Priests, which also has a special blessing for the
scapular, is available for priests from the World Apostolate of Fatima upon
request. In many places, it is traditional to invest children in the Brown
Scapular on the day of their Baptism or First Holy Communion.
Q. May a layperson receive the faculty for investing
others in the Brown Scapular?
A.
Only priests are permitted to invest someone in the Brown Scapular.
Q. May a non-Catholic wear the Brown Scapular?
A.
Yes, and in so doing, a non-Catholic will receive many graces and blessings
with this special sign of devotion to the Mother of God. Although baptized
Catholics are the only one who can be officially invested in the Brown Scapular
Confraternity and share in the special scapular privileges, non-Catholics are
warmly encouraged to avail themselves to this special way of honoring Jesus'
Mother.
Q. I was once invested in the Brown Scapular but have
failed to wear it for some time. Must I be reinvested in order to derive the
scapular benefits?
A.
Membership in the Confraternity is not forfeited by merely laying aside the
scapular. One need only begin wearing it again.
Q. How should I wear the Brown Scapular?
A. The scapular is a habit; Our Lady's habit. The scapular is
worn over the shoulders in such a manner that one part hangs in front of the
body and the other in back. It is usually worn under one's outer clothing but
not necessarily next to the skin. It can be carried next to your body, as long
as you carry it on your person. Members of the WAF are encouraged to wear it
over their neck to witness their Faith. The scapular may be enclosed in some
sort of case: metal or plastic, provided
the case does not prevent the scapular material from being attached to the
braid or chain. A deteriorated scapular
should be burned or buried; any metal or plastic covering may be discarded. The
new scapular must be blessed before using it.
Q. Must the Brown Scapular be made of wool?
A.
At one time, this was a requirement. However, Carmelite regulations now permit
the scapular to be made from any suitable brown material.
Q. May I substitute the Scapular Medal for the cloth
Scapular?
A.
While the Scapular Medal enjoys all the privileges granted to those wearing the
cloth scapular (except for the partial indulgence for kissing the scapular
granted by Pope Benedict XV), the substitution of the medal for the cloth
should only be made for a good and serious reason. St. Pius X insisted that he
“…did not intend that the Scapular Medal should supplant the Brown Scapular in
Europe and America”. He said, “I wear the cloth; let us never take it off”.
Q. There are many different scapulars. Why does the World
Apostolate of Fatima promote the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel?
A.
The World Apostolate of Fatima promotes the Brown Scapular because it is the
sign of our personal consecration to God through the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Also, because of the tremendous privileges granted to those who faithfully use
it as a sign of their efforts to come closer to God by living a Christian life.
Those privileges are protection in this life, at the hour of death a promise of
salvation (either by the grace of perseverance or by the grace of final
contrition) and after death, the maternal promise of Mary to bring us to heaven
as soon as possible. In addition, Our Lady appeared at Fatima on October 13,
1917 as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to show us the way to spiritual perfection.
The Ritual of Investiture admits the
one being invested to a participation “in all the Masses, prayers and good
works performed by the religious of Mount Carmel”. This participation, plus the
great promise of salvation and the privileges offered give an unspeakable
spiritual value to the Brown Scapular devotion.
In 1950, Pope Pius XII wrote the
now-famous words concerning the scapular: “Let it be your sign of consecration
to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which we are particularly urging in these
perilous times”.
On 17th July 2011, Pope Benedict XVI
referred to wearing the scapular as a "particular sign of union with Jesus
and Mary," when he addressed Polish-speaking pilgrims gathered at the
papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo to pray the midday Angelus. "For
those who wear it, it is a sign of filial abandonment to the protection of the
Immaculate Virgin," he said. "In our battle against evil, may Mary,
our Mother wrap us in her mantle."

INVESTITURE FORMULA
Ø Blessing
and clothing with the Scapular of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel
enrolls the individual in the Scapular Confraternity, a prayer organization
almost as large as the Church itself.
Ø If
Scapulars only are to be blessed, the priest begins the blessing with “Show us,
O Lord, your mercy: and ends with the prayer “O Lord, Jesus Christ…”
1. The Scapular Investiture
Formula:
Priest : Show
us, O Lord, your mercy.
All : And grant us your salvation.
Priest : O
Lord, hear my prayer.
All : And let my cry come to you.
Priest : The
Lord be with you.
All : And also with you.
Priest : Let
us pray:
O Lord Jesus
Christ, Savior of mankind, by your right hand sanctify + these Scapulars (this Scapular) which your servants (servant) will devoutly wear for the
love of you and of your Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel; so
that by her intercession, they (he/she) may
be protected from the wickedness of the enemy and preserve in your grace until

2. The PRIEST now sprinkles the Scapular with
Holy Water.

Receive this
blessed Scapular and ask the Most Holy Virgin that by her merits, it may be
worn with no stain and may protect you from all harm and bring you into
everlasting life.

4. Then the Priest
personally places the Scapular on each one.

granted on me, I admit you to a share in all the spiritual works performed,
with the merciful help of Jesus Christ, by the Religious of Mount Carmel; in

May Almighty
God, Creator of heaven and earth, bless you whom he has been pleased to receive
into the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount
Carmel . We beg her to crush

obtain for you a palm and the crown of your everlasting inheritance, through
Christ Our Lord.

Excerpt from the Carmelite Constitutions of 1995:
Mary, overshadowed by the Spirit of God, is the Virgin of the new heart, who gave a human face to the Word made flesh. She is the Virgin of wise and contemplative listening who kept and pondered in her heart the events and the words of the Lord. She is the faithful disciple of wisdom, who sought Jesus, God’s Wisdom and allowed herself to be formed and molded by his Spirit, so that in faith she might be conformed to his ways and choices. Thus enlightened, Mary is presented to us as one able to read “the great wonders” which God accomplished in her for the salvation of the humble and of the poor.
The scapular is a sign of Mary’s permanent and constant motherly love for Carmelite brothers and sisters. By their devotion to the scapular, faithful to a tradition in the Order, especially since the 16th century, Carmelites express the loving closeness of Mary to the people of God; it is a sign of consecration to Mary, a means of uniting the faithful to the Order, and an effective and popular means of evangelization.Mary was not only the Mother of Our Lord; she also became his perfect disciple, the woman of faith. She followed Jesus, walking with the disciples, sharing their demanding and wearisome journey — a journey which required, above all, fraternal love and mutual service.At the marriage feast in Cana, Mary taught us to believe in her Son; at the foot of the Cross, she became Mother to all who believe; with them she experiences the joy of the Resurrection. United with the other disciples “in constant prayer,” she received the first gifts of the Spirit, who filled the earliest Christian community with apostolic zeal.Mary brings the good news of salvation to all men and women. BROWN SCAPULAR – Sign of Consecration
to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
SAINT SIMON STOCK
When the Moslems invaded the Holy Land , the Brothers of Blessed Mary of Mount Carmel
were forced to flee to the West. St. Simon Stock became Superior General of a
group of these men in 1246. The community by this time was known as the
Carmelite Order, in reference to their place of origin, Mount
Carmel . The Carmelite Order was having so many problems at that
time that St. Simon Stock feared it would end. He begged Our Lady, as Patroness
of the Order, to grant some privilege to the Order dedicated especially to her.
Then Our Lady intervened for her special
community and, according to Carmelite tradition, appeared to St. Simon Stock
giving him what we know today as the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount
Carmel. She said: “Dear son, take the Scapular of your Order as the badge of my
brotherhood and a special grace for you and all Carmelites. Whoever dies in
this garment will not suffer everlasting fire. It is a token of salvation. It
safeguards in danger. It pledges us to peace and the Covenant.”
The date of her appearance to St. Simon
Stock was July 16, 1251 ,
now celebrated as the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel .
The Scapular vision
In
1389, the General of the Carmelite Order, John Grossi, wrote the book known as
“The Viridarium”. A Catalogue of the Carmelite saints, it gives the following
account of the Scapular Vision.
The
ninth Saint of the order is Saint Simon of England the sixth General, who
besought the Most Glorious Mother of God that She grant some privilege to the
Carmelites, who rejoiced in being named especially the “THE ORDER OF THE
VIRGIN”. He repeated in a most devout manner:
O Beautiful Flower OF Carmel ,
Most Fruitful Vine, Splendour Of Heaven,
Holy And Singular,
Who Brought Forth the Son Of God,
Still Even Remaining A Virgin,
Assist Me In This Necessity, O Star Of The
Sea,
Help And Protect Me,
Show Me that You Are My Mother.
And, accompanied by a multitude of Angels,
the Blessed Virgin appeared to him, holding in Her hands, the Scapular of his Order
and said:
This Shall Be To You
And All Carmelites
A
Privilege.
That Anyone Who Dies
Clothed In This
Shall Not Suffer Eternal Fire:
And If Wearing If They Die:
They Shall Be Saved.
On 13th Oct 1917 after the 6th & last
Apparition of Our Lady, She appeared as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Crowned queen
of Heaven & Earth (5th glorious mystery of the Rosary ) with the child
Jesus in Her bosom. SHE DID NOT SPEAK. The Scapular Devotion is Silent.
When
asked why Our Lady held out the Scapular, Lucia replied: “Because She wants
everyone to wear it. It is as Pope Pius XII has said the sign of
Consecration to Her Immaculate Heart” (1950).
Pressed
further as to which was more important she said ,”The Scapular & Rosary are
inseparable”.
Mary is always present in a special way to
those who wear the Scapular: PROTECTING, GUIDING, HELPING AND LAVISHING A
MOTHER’S TRUE LOVE AND AFFECTION.”
The
opposition nevertheless persisted and so a petition was sent to the Bishop of
Fatima to settle this matter once and for all. This he did in a long, detailed,
definitive statement in July 1953, on three controversial points, ending “The
use of the Scapular of Mount Carmel with all its obligations is considered one
of the points of her (Fatima ) Message, as a very
efficacious means of salvation of souls and the world.”
•
In Sr. Lucia’s view, the
apparition of Our Lady of Mount Carmel means total
Consecration
to God.
•
By showing Herself clothed in a
religious habit, she wished to represent all other habits by which those who
are totally consecrated to God can be distinguished from ordinary secular
Christians (Sr. Lucia: “Calls” from the Message of Fatima, 18th call )
•
In this spirit of Consecration
and Conversion that God wishes to establish in the world, the devotion to the
Immaculate Heart of Mary
•
We all know that a mother’s
heart represents love in the bosom of a family.
•
In fact, it is love which makes
the mother bend over her baby’s cradle, sacrifice herself for it, give herself,
rush to the defence of her child.
•
All children trust in the heart of their
mother, and we all know that we have in her a place of special affection.
•
The same applies to the Virgin
Mary.
•
Thus the Message says << My
Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God
>> Hence, the Heart of Mary is the
refuge and the way to God for all His children , (11th call )
•
The Committee of Bishops which
prepared paragraph 67 of Lumen Gentium (Constitution on the Modern Church )
judged that it should be left to the Holy Father, then, Pope Paul VI, at any
given moment in history, to indicate which devotions were of greatest
importance.
On May 13, 1967 , Pope Paul VI issued the encyclical SIGNUM
MAGNUM and paid a personal visit to Fatima .
His Holiness said that the two principal Marian devotions for our time, in
keeping with Paragraph 67 of LUMEN GENTIUM, are the Scapular of Mt. Carmel and
the Rosary (the two principal devotions promoted by the World Apostolate of
Fatima)
These 2 devotions were never before linked
to a single Apostolate until the 1946 Meeting of Mr. John Haffert with Sr.
Lucia when the Pledge was drafted and approved by the 1st Bishop of Fatima Most
Rev. Jose Correia da Silva,
17 years before the promulgation of Lumen
Gentium.

For the July 16th, 2001 , 750th anniversary of
the Bestowal of the scapular, Pope John
Paul II sent the Carmelite family the message:
•
Over time this Marian heritage
of Carmel has
become, through the spread of the Holy Scapular devotion, a treasure for the
whole Church. By its simplicity, its relationship to Mary’s role in regard to
the Church and humanity, this devotion was so deeply and widely accepted by the
people of God……… that it came to be expressed in the memorial of 16th July on
the liturgical calendar of the Universal Church….

I TOO HAVE WORN THE SCAPULAR
OVER MY HEART for a long time out of my love for
our common Heavenly Mother whose protection I constantly experience. I hope
that this Marian Year will help all of Carmel
and the devout faithful who venerate Her… to grow in Her love and to radiate to
the world the presence of this Woman of silence and prayer.

It is essentially a habit which
evokes the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary in this life and in the
passage to the fullness of eternal glory.
•
THE SCAPULAR REMINDS US that this devotion must become a uniform that is a Christian
lifestyle, woven of prayer and interior life. I hope that this anniversary may
be for each one of you an occasion for personal conversion, for community
renewal.
What
endows the Scapular with such powers? The Carmelites give three reasons.
- The first is that from the moment we are enrolled in the Scapular we are dedicated to Mary in a special way, and have a special claim upon Her protection and intercession.
2. Association with the Order of Carmel and its’ good things i.e share in all the masses, prayers and good works.
- Intercession of Carmelite saints in heaven like Prophets Elijah and Elisha on Mount Carmel, of St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila, sixteen Carmelite of the French revolution martyrs of Hitler’s concentration camps, St. Edith Stein and Blessed Titus Brandsma, the little flower St. Theresa of the child Jesus & St. Pio
Archbishop
Fulton Sheen Says:
“The
Scapular Bears A Double Witness: To Mary’s Protection Against The Ravages Of
The Flesh Occasioned By The Fall, And To Mary’s Influence As Mediatrix Of
Graces Who Covers Our Souls With
The
Richness of Her Son’s Redemption.”
TRUE DEVOTION TO MARY consists of three things- VENERATION, CONFIDENCE, and LOVE.
Without
saying to Mary that we venerate Her, trust Her and love Her, we tell Her these
three things every moment of the day simply wearing Her Scapular.
VENERATION. When we clothe ourselves in Her livery we render Her homage.
CONFIDENCE. Mary is the Mother of God and Her power is infinite. We have
confidence in Her three great promises to protect us in danger, help us to die
well and promptly to aid us after death. It is She who has assumed all these obligations
in our regard.
LOVE.
MARY’S LOVE IS FATHOMLESS and it is because of Her
love She made the Scapular promise, the sign and proof of Her LOVE. Mary, by
loving us, obliges us to love Her, the filial love of a child to its Mother.
THE SCAPULAR THEN IS A PRAYER. Our Lord taught us to say the Our
Father. Mary taught us the value of the Scapular. When we use it as a
prayer, Our Lady draws us to the Scared Heart of Her Divine Son. It is well,
therefore, to hold the Scapular in one’s hand while addressing Our Lady.

All 9 Popes of the 20th century
have been ardent Scapular devotees and zealous promoters
•
THEY HAVE WORN, SPOKEN OF,
WRITTEN ABOUT, LEGISLATED FOR, DEFENDED, DOCUMENTED AND INDULGENCED THE
SCAPULAR.
•
Both Pope Saint Pius X and Pope
John Paul II belong to the Carmelite Third Order and probably some of the other
nine too. It may have lost its popularity with the people, hence the Fatima reminder, but with the Popes, it has
stood the test of time.
•
In his book GIFT AND MYSTERY
ON THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF MY PRIESTLY ORDINATION. Pope John Paul II wrote that at the age of ten he received the
Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel adding,
“I still wear it.” He also wrote,” for a certain period I even considered the
possibility of becoming a Carmelite.”

The spiritual places that
inspired him were the Polish Marian Shrines and MOUNT
CARMEL whose influence he especially felt at the monastery of the
Discalced Carmelite Fathers in Krakow ,

ALWAYS WEAR IT AND IT HAS DONE ME MUCH GOOD. “His

constant protection of the Blessed Virgin, not only on life’s journey, but also
at the moment of passing into eternal life,”

DOCTORS OF THE CHURCH CONCUR, SAYS POPE
PIUS XI. (1922-1939) “Nor would he incur eternal
death whom the Blessed Virgin assists, especially at his last hour. This
opinion of the Doctors of the Church, in harmony with the sentiments of the
Christian people, and supported by the experience of all times, depends
especially on this reason: THE FACT THAT THE SORROWFUL VIRGIN SHARED IN THE
WORK OF THE REDEMPTION WITH JESUS CHRIST.
ATTAINING
HEAVEN SAYS POPE PIUS XII.
(1939-1958)
“For not with a light or passing matter are we here concerned but with the
obtaining of eternal life itself,……….. that Promise of the Most Blessed Virgin
which has been handed down to us. We are concerned, namely, with that WHICH IS
OF SUPREME IMPORTANCE TO ALL AND WITH THE MANNER OF ACHIEVING IT .” (Heaven )
“The
Holy Carmelite Scapular must be placed in the first rank of the most favoured
of Marian Devotions.”
THE
CREDIBILITY OF THE SCAPULAR PROMISE. “The evidence
favoring the acceptance and historicity of the Scapular tradition amply fulfils
the requirements laid down by Pope St. Pius X : “that pious traditions be
supported by suitable testimonies and witnesses”.
THE SABBATINE OR SATURDAY PRIVILEGE is based on a Papal Bull ‘ Sacratissimo Ute Culmine’ of Pope John
XXII issued on March 3, 1322. In this Bull the
Pope states that the Blessed Virgin appeared to him, reminded him of Her
promise to St. Simon Stock some years earlier and gave him an even bigger
promise:
THAT
SHE WOULD FREE ALL CARMELITES AND SCAPULAR CONFRATERNITY MEMBERS FROM PURGATORY
ON THE FIRST SATURDAY AFTER DEATH.
A
Papal Bull is the most solemn form of papal decree.
The
Pope concludes with these words: “I therefore accept this holy indulgence; I
ratify and confirm it on earth, as Jesus Christ has graciously granted it in
heaven through the merits of the Most Blessed Virgin.”
THREE
CONDITIONS SPECIFIED FOR THIS GREAT PROMISE
- Wear the Scapular at all times.
- Practicing the virtues of Christian life especially chastity according to one’s state of life.
- Daily recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin, (Rosary was not so well known in 1322 ) OR Abstinence from meat on Wednesday and Saturdays for those who could not read. According to the new Scapular rituals of 1996, it is no longer necessary for those being enrolled in the Brown Scapular to seek permission to substitute the praying of the Rosary for the little office.
WAR AND PEACE
For
many centuries the Church has designated Our Lady’s Brown Scapular as SIGNUM
PACIS - THE SIGN OF PEACE Our Lady gave us the Scapular as a sign of salvation,
a protection in danger and A PLEDGE OF PEACE. It was during World
War I, in 1917, that Our Lady appeared in Fatima
and made the Scapular of Mount Carmel (silently) one of the requests for peace.
She said: WAR IS A
PUNISHMENT FOR SIN.
PONTIFFS
•
Pope Gregory XIII called it a GARMENT OF SALVATION.
‘She
brought forth the Order of Carmel and
nourished it at her breasts AND SHE CLOTHED IT IN A GARMENT OF
SALVATION.’
•
Pope Benedict XIV encouraged the faithful to wear it with full confidence
in Mary’s Promise. Anyone dying in Mary’s family will receive at the hour of
death either perseverance in the state of grace or FINAL CONTRITION .

“He who dares to call into
question the validity of the Scapular devotion or deny its privilege would be a
proud despiser of religion.”
•
“Only a condemner of religion
would deny the authenticity of the Scapular Promise.”
“I,
the Mother of Grace, Shall descend into Purgatory on the Saturday after their Death
and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory (Scapular Wearers) I shall free” (Our Lady to Pope John XXII in 1322)

Pope LEO XIII when he was dying
called his familiars to his bed and said: “let us make a Novena to Our Lady of
the Scapular and I shall be ready to die”.

Pope Benedict IV : Message to Seminarians “let all of you
have a common language and a common armor:
The
language- the sentences of the Gospel,
The
armor- the Scapular of the Virgin of Carmel which you all ought to wear and
enjoy the singular privilege of PROTECTION AFTER DEATH
Pope
Pius XI first announcement after the election was on the Sabbatine Privilege :
“All
members of the Scapular confraternity
should persevere in the Holy Exercises prescribed for the gaining of that privilege from the Mother of God
because it extends even after death.”
Pope
Pius XII: ”And certainly this most gentle Mother will not delay to open AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE, the gates of Heaven for Her children who are expiating their faults in PURGATORY, a trust based on that
promise known as the Sabbatine” (Privilege).
Lucia
said that on 13th
October 1917 , at Fatima , she saw St. Joseph
holding the Child Jesus and together they made the sign of the Cross three
times over the world.

Joseph is the Father of Him of whom Mary is the Mother, he is necessarily the

THE
GREATEST BENEFIT OF THE SCAPULAR.
Of
all the benefits that flow from the Scapular this benefit of being the special
children of St. Joseph
is the greatest. St. Thomas Aquinas said that God could make no mother greater
than the Mother of God. And you may add, he said, GOD CANNOT MAKE A GREATER
FATHER THAN JOSEPH WAS TO JESUS
“St. Joseph is like a
bright shining star that protects those souls who fight the battle of
life under Mary’s Standard”. (The Scapular). Said St.
Mary Magdalene da Pazzi (Feast May
25th), the Carmelite saint who had a vision of St. Joseph in his glory).
CARMELITES
AND ST. JOSEPH. The Carmelite family are said to
have brought the public cult of St.
Joseph with them from the Orient to the West, and the
first Church to St. Joseph
in the West was a Carmelite
Church . St. Teresa of Avila dedicated the first
Monastery of a Reformed Carmel to him. The Blessed Virgin is said to have told
her,” I am so pleased that you have consecrated
yourself to St. Joseph .
You may ask anything for your convent with perfect certainty that you shall
receive it. St. JOSEPH’S FEAST
ON 19TH MARCH was first celebrated
by Carmelities and then made universal by Pope Sixtus I in 1491. But a further
feast THE PATRONAGE OF ST. JOSEPH was granted to the Carmelite Order in 1689.
PATRON
OF A HAPPY DEATH. St. Joseph is the patron of a happy death.
The Scapular is an assurance of a happy death. The Scapular has come to be
known as A SIGN OF CHASTITY St.
Joseph ’s chastity was unique. He was chosen to live in
a virginal state with MARY THE IMMACULATE.
It
is a sign of Mary’s FIAT: Saying Yes to God’s will. Entrustment of one’s life
and possessions are portrayed externally by the Brown Scapular
After
the Scapular vision in 1251, Our Lady
appeared to St. Peter Thomas (1305-1366), a Carmelite French Bishop and told
him that the order of Carmel
would flourish till the end of the world.
MOST
CONSIDER THE SCAPULAR OBSOLETE
On
5th Jan, 1996 , in Rome , the Congregation
for Divine worship and Discipline of the Sacraments approved a new formula for
Enrolment in the Scapular and the Rite of Blessing.
It
contains a gold mine of Treasures.
Pope
John Paul II quotes from this document
in his message to the Carmelites on the 750th Annv.. of the Scapular
vision:
“Those
who wear the Scapular are thus brought into the land of Carmel ,
so that they may ‘EAT ITS FRUITS AND ITS GOOD THINGS.” ( Cf. Jer.2 :)
Says
the new document,” wearing the Scapular can well relate to St. Paul ’s reference to life in Christ in
terms of putting on Christ”.
MARY-
THE MASTERPIECE OF THE TRINITY.
“Mary
is the masterpiece of the Most Blessed Trinity who united Her to Itself. The
Scapular is a symbol of filial and grateful recognition of the mission which
the most Blessed Trinity willed to confide to Mary in the history of salvation,
“ TO IMITATE THE PRAYING VIRGIN. The Church on her faith pilgrimage finds its
best model in our Lady. Wearing the Brown Scapular in the Spirit of Carmel is
giving Mary more space in our lives. “The three phases of the ascent of Mount Carmel (to Heaven) are IMITATION, UNION ,
LIKENESS TO MARY.”
IDENTIFY
WITH CARMEL : “Those who wear the Scapular identify themselves with the mission
of Carmel
…..through visible signs of sharing, reconciliation, justice, looking after the
sick, listening to the cries of the poor.”
THE NEW
ENROLLMENT RITUAL
THE
NEW DOCUMENT says that Blessing and Investment in
the Scapular should ‘preferably take place within a community celebration.’
The
New Investment Ritual puts these significant words on the lips of Mary: "I
bring you a Scapular as a sign of My blessing and My love, and at the same
time, as the sign of the mystery which will be accomplished in you. I come to
fully clothe you in Jesus Christ so that you may be rooted in Him. The royal
way.... with the Father and Spirit of love.“
There
is now a long and short (alternative) form of the Rite for the Blessing of and
Enrolment in the Scapular of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel. Each Ritual
consists of an opening Rite: Old and New Testament Readings, a short Exhortation (longer Rite only);
Intercessory Prayers, a Prayer of Blessing;
Enrollment in the Scapular and the Closing Rite.
The
traditional Scapular must be used for the Blessing and the Enrollment, after
which the Scapular Medal may replace it, for valid reasons only. For example,
in the tropics people may wear the medal because of the profuse perspiration.
Nevertheless, the medal does not bestow the same indulgences upon the wearer
than the scapular does.
Once
enrolled in the Scapular, it is
unnecessary for a person to have Blessed new Scapulars or Scapular Medals that
he wears.
ENROLLMENT VALID FOR LIFE. People are enrolled in the
Scapular ONLY ONCE. You lose the benefits when not worn, but if you start
wearing it again even after years the enrollment is still valid.
AFFILIATION
TO CARMELITES. The Enrollment implies affiliation to
the Carmelite family, and so preferably a
Carmelite should give the
Scapular. In case of impossibility any priest or deacon can do so. The Superiors of the Carmelite
Family at the General or Provincial
level have the right to authorize others
to enroll in the Scapular.
A
discarded Scapular should be buried or burnt, but the metal or plastic covering can be discarded.
The
World Apostolate of Fatima prefers CLOTH:
"Experience
teaches that those who use the medal without sufficient reason rarely persevere
in this devotion. One advantage of the
cloth is that it reminds us daily of our union with Mary: it must be worn over
the shoulders, tucked in, it must be changed to be washed so that we are never
with out it"
"The
Lamb of God who takes away the sins of
the World" is Symbolized in the Woolen Brown Scapular and is thus
preferable to the medal.
Brown
because it is Mary’s dress, when She was alive on earth. She wants Her children
to initiate Her virtues, same life style, not earthly.
THE SCAPULAR IS A SACRAMENTAL
WEAR
IT DEVOUTLY
As the Scapular is Sacramental
the Church insists that it is worn devoutly. It has a feast day, a
liturgy. The two other Sacramentals honored with a Feast and Office are the Rosary
and the Miraculous Medal. Vatican II,
Liturgy 61 says: The death and
Resurrection of Christ is the fount from which all Sacraments and Sacramentals draw their power.
WHAT
THEN IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SACRAMENT AND A SARAMENTAL ?
The
principal difference is that the Sacraments were instituted BY CHRIST as
channels of grace to all who receive them worthily, whereas the Sacramentals
were instituted BY THE CHURCH and do not by themselves give grace, but produce their effects by the prayers and
blessings of the Church. Sacramentals depend chiefly on the pious intentions of
the people who make use of them.
SACRAMENTALS
LEAD US TO THE SACRAMENTS . Vatican II, Liturgy 60 says "Sacramentals: are
sacred signs which bear a resemblance to
the Sacraments; they signify effects, particularly
of a spiritual kind, which are obtained through the Church’s intercession. By
them men are disposed to receive the chief effects of the Sacraments, and
various occasions of life are rendered
holy,"
A PROPER APPRECIATION OF THE
SACRAMENTALS
rests on the realization of their place in the ecclesial plan of
salvation: they are less than the Sacraments but more powerful than purely private prayer. Such an attitude
removes any danger of either exaggerating Sacramentals at the expense of Sacraments or of
overlooking their significant place in Christian living.
THOSE
LITTLE EXTRAS. Sacramentals are those little extras in our every day life - the images, actions, blessings unique to our faith that often tell
others we are Catholic; the externals
that make the Catholic way of life unique and outstanding. Sacramentals have
embellished the official liturgy of the Church or sprung from the cultures
of different people and different times. For being
Catholic is more than just Mass and the Sacraments. It is a way of life
in which the body, its senses and spirit are intermingled.
MAGIC
OR SUPERSTITION.
A Sacramental is NOT
superstition. It is the part of us that longs for some thing tangible we can
hold on to. Superstition is second cousin to magic. A Sacramental used properly
will bring us closer to God. The youth who blessed his car with Holy Water
and prays for a safe journey - a mother who uses a Miraculous Medal in times of
illness - a recovering alcoholic who kisses his Scapular in the morning for
strength to get through the day.

AND WHY CAN POPES GRANT INDULGENCES ? Pope
Clement VI as far back as 1343 gives a
beautiful explanation as to how and why Popes have the power to grant
indulgences.
Upon
The Altar Of The Cross Christ Shed His Blood......
Not
Merely A Drop (Though This Would Have Sufficed To Redeem The Whole Human Race)
But A Copious Torrent ....... Thereby Laying Up An Infinite Treasure For
Mankind......The Treasure He Entrusted To St. Peter , The Key Bearer, And His Successors, That They
Might For Just And Reasonable Cause
Distribute it To The Faithful In Full Or
In Partial Remission Of the Temporal Punishment Due To Sin.
HOW TO GAIN A PLENARY ? A plenary then is full remission, total
amnesty, and wipes the sinners slate clean. BUT IT IS NOT THAT EASY. The Catholic Almanac says 1) A
person has to be free from all attachment to sin and, besides the specified
work, fulfill three conditions:

Separate Holy Communion for each
plenary.
3. Confession
- ONE CONFESSION sufficient for gaining SEVERAL plenary indulgences several
days before or after
4. A Prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father on the day the indulgence
is gained.
"To
increase more and more among the faithful, devotion to the Virgin of Carmel,
whence flow the richest and most wholesome fruit of the soul," This is the
reason Pope Leo XIII gave when he granted
a plenary indulgence in 1892 to those who visited a Carmelite Church
on the Scapular Feast.
THE LATEST CATECHISM BOOK SAYS: “The Church does not want simply to come to the aid of these
Christians (by granting indulgences) but also to spur them to works of
devotion, penance and charity." And to spur them to wear and persevere in
wearing the Scapular, the Church through seven centuries heaped it with
indulgences. Another big incentive is that indulgences are applicable to
the souls in Purgatory. It means
that an indulgence can be used to transfer a soul (maybe a dear
departed) to Paradise .
AT
FATIMA the three children prayed the Rosary with the
crowds waiting for Our Lady. The Church now grants a plenary for praying the Rosary in common, in church, public
oratory, a family group or pious association.
Pope John Paul II to teenagers: “Every
mother is concerned that her child has clean and decent clothes to wear, and so
Mary has given this special garment to us, the Scapular. I HOPE THAT YOU TOO
WILL WEAR IT AS A SIGN OF HER
PROTECTION”.
CHILDREN
LIKE EXTERNAL AIDS. The Scapular is something most
children will want to wear if it is properly presented. They will wear it when
they are made aware of the protection Our Lady bestows and Scapular wearers;
when they hear of the miracles and favors granted through the Scapular. Many
young people will never be without it once they know the two great promises
attached to it.
ONE
IMPORTANT LESSON: ‘The Catholic Church boasts: Give
me the child till he is 12 year old and I will have him for life. Any parent or teacher engaged in the
education of children can boast: Let me
teach the child one thing he will remember for life and he will save his soul. Any child in whose heart I can implant the wisdom of ONE IMPORTANT
LESSON, the lesson which will prompt him to wear the Scapular, AND TO
WEAR IT ALWAYS.’
The Scapular, know as The ARMOR OF SAINTS,
was worn, recommended and written about by Doctors of the Church, Patron Saints
and Founders of many Religious Orders. The Holy Spirit specially inspires a
founder, and the Order is founded at a particular stage to serve a specific
purpose.
MIRACULOSLY
PRESERVED SCAPULARS.
When
the bodies of three founders were exhumed, their clothes and everything else
had disintegrated, but on the skeletons
THE SCAPULARS WERE FOUND INTACT.
These
three founders were
- ST. ALPHONSUS LIGUORI (redemptorists)
- ST. JOHN BOSCO (Salesians)
- FR. MICHAEL MCGIVENY (Knight of Columbus).
The
Scapular of BLESSED POPE GREGORY

Was also found Intact after 600 years.
THE
MONKS SCAPULAR. The world ‘Scapular’ is derived from the Latin word for Shoulder. The original Scapular was a standard part of
the habit worn in monastic orders from about 547 AD. It was a long straight
garment, the width of the body and ankle length, with an opening for the head, hanging full in back
and front. Its purpose - to protect the cassock like an apron.
The
Scapular known as the SUPERTUNIC WAS
AN IMITATION of the garment worn by the Doctors of Old Testament bereft of
its borders and tassels. It was often called a "SUPER HUMERAL
"(OVER THE SHOULDERS) HENCE THE NAME SCAPULAR.
SCAPULAR GETS SMALLER AND SMALLER.
Since
lay people eagerly sought to be included in Our Lady’s Promise of a happy
death, and a full Scapular could not be conveniently worn over civilian clothing, the
Carmelites solved the problem by fashioning two squares of brown cloth
joined by two strings. Soon the squares became smaller and smaller till our
present size.
NOT
TUCKED OR PINNED. As the Scapular is a garment –
Mary’s Habit, it must not be tucked or pinned. It must be worn round the neck
so that one part hangs in front and one at the back. It is usually worn under
one's clothing, but not necessarily next to the skin.
We
should Kiss the Scapular whenever we awake from sleep. It is a precious,
wordless embrace with Mary our
Mother. Pope Benedict XV attached 500
days indulgence to this Simple act (not
for Medal).
Some practical rules
•
People are enrolled in the
Scapular only once, by a priest or authorized person.
•
The Scapular can be replaced afterwards by medal which has
on one side the image of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus and on the other, the
image of Mary.
•
The Scapular holds us to live as authentic Christians in line with the
teaching of Gospel, to receive the
sacraments, to profess our special devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which
should be expressed each day, at least , by saying the Hail Mary three times.
SHORT FORM FOR GIVING SCAPULAR

Receive this Scapular, a sign of your special relationship with Mary the Mother of Jesus, whom you
pledge to imitate. May it be a reminder to you of your dignity as a Christian,
in serving others and imitating Mary. Wear it as a sign of her protection and
of belonging to the family of Carmel ,
voluntarily doing the will of God and devoting yourself to building a world
true to his plan of community, justice and peace.

of Jesus Christ, by the Religious of Mount Carmel; in the name of the Father

almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth bless you whom He has been pleased to
receive into the confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. We
beg her to crush the head of the ancient serpent in the hour of your death, and
in the end, to obtain for you the palm and the crown of your everlasting
